How to Do an At-Home Gel Manicure: Step-by-Step Guide

A gel manicure at home saves you a lot of money and time — as long as you know how to do it right. The most common reason gel polish chips or lifts after a few days isn't "bad gel polish" but small mistakes in technique. In this guide we'll take you through the whole process step by step, so your manicure lasts 2–3 weeks.

🛍️ What will you need?

Before you start, have everything within reach:

  • Nail prep products — a cleanser/dehydrator and a buffing product or bonder. You'll find them in our nail prep collection.
  • Gel base coat — the foundation of a long-lasting manicure.
  • Gel polish colour — your chosen shade (or several).
  • Gel top coat — glossy or matte.
  • A UV/LED lamp with the right wattage, a nail file, a buffer block, a cuticle pusher and cuticle oil.

Gel manicure step by step

1

Prepping the nail plate

This is the most important stage — it decides how long your manicure will last. Shape your nails with a file, gently push back the cuticles and buff the surface of the nail plate with a buffer block — the goal is to remove the natural shine, not to file the nail down. Finally, thoroughly dehydrate the nails with a cleanser. The nail plate must be dry, clean and matte.

2

Applying the base coat

Apply a thin layer of base coat, working it well into the nail plate, especially near the cuticles and along the free edge. Be careful not to flood the cuticles — that's the most common cause of lifting and irritation. Cure in the lamp as recommended (usually 30–60 seconds). A good gel base coat is the foundation of the whole manicure.

3

Applying colour

Apply colour in two thin layers rather than one thick one. The first layer may look slightly sheer — that's normal. Cure each layer separately. Thin layers cure better, cover more evenly and last longer. Remember to cap the free edge of the nail (known as "sealing" the tip) — that's what protects against chipping. The highly pigmented Very You gel polish colours usually give full coverage in just two layers.

4

Top coat and finish

Finally, apply a gel top coat, again sealing the free edge, and cure in the lamp. If you're using a top coat that needs wiping, remove the sticky inhibition layer with a cleanser. Choose a glossy top coat for a mirror-like shine or a matte one for a modern, velvety finish.

5

Aftercare

Massage cuticle oil into the cuticles and nail plate. Moisturised nails are less prone to breaking, and your manicure looks better for longer. Repeat daily between manicures.

⚠️ Common questions and beginner mistakes

Most problems with wear time come down to a handful of recurring mistakes: layers that are too thick, skipping buffing the nail plate, flooding the cuticles, not sealing the free edge and a weak lamp.

We cover them in detail in a separate article: 7 gel manicure mistakes — worth reading before you sit down to do your first manicure.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How long does an at-home gel manicure last?

With the right technique and good nail prep — 2 to 3 weeks, the same as in a salon. Wear time depends mainly on prep and the quality of your base and top coat.

Do I need an e-file to do gel nails at home?

No. For a basic manicure, a nail file and a buffer block are enough. An e-file speeds things up and makes cuticle work easier, but beginners don't need one.

What's the best lamp for gel polish?

The safest choice is a UV/LED (dual) lamp, usually 36–48 W, which cures most products. Always check the recommended curing time for your specific base coat, colour and top coat.

How many layers of colour should I apply?

Usually two thin layers. Very light shades may need a third. Several thin layers are always better than one thick one.
